Our Rating: ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ for Stability, Comfort and Longevity
If, like me, you feel dizzy, faint, get fatigued or have increased pain when standing up in the shower, a good shower stool, such as this one from Amazon that I use, could be the simple solution that makes daily self-care and bathing accessible once more, even if your bathroom is tiny like my en suite. After trying budget round ones and spinning shower stools, I finally found this rectangular, reinforced shower stool from Amazon with handles for ease of movement that has outlasted all the rest.
✦ What It Is
A shower stool is specifically designed to be safely used in your bath or shower cubicle without slipping or becoming damaged by the water.
You can get shorter shower stools, more aesthetic ones like this chic slatted wooden stool from Wayfair, or like mine, pictured above. It is made of plastic seating with drainage holes, on a firm metal frame with handles and non-slip feet.
✦ Why We Love It
Comfort: The wide, ergonomic, non-slip seat is comfortable, and the drainage holes stop it from becoming slippery. The legs are adjustable for height, and you can sit with your feet on the floor, without your knees being more than 90 degrees.
Design: The legs do not splay like the cheaper round shower stools I made do with when I got my first one. This sturdy, well-built one from Amazon makes me feel super secure and confident when I am showering. This means if the heat, steam or simply being upright in the shower starts to make me feel unwell, I can sit comfortably until I feel better without any risk of injury.
✦ Best to Know
Weight: This chair is the heaviest shower stool I’ve had, at 5.5kg (around 12lbs), and I had to get my husband to alter each leg as it’s a bit too hard for me to lift and manoeuvre without hurting myself.
Assembly: It comes fully assembled, hurrah!
✦ Who It’s Best For
Those who struggle to stay on their feet are Living In Pain and/or with fatigue
Those who feel faint and ill in heat or humidity
Those who get worn out from having a shower and have to take time to rest afterwards
Those who suffer with chronic illnesses that make them dizzy, have low blood pressure or faint, such as POTS (a subset of dysautonomic disorders), have pain (for example, from arthritis, connective tissue disorders, CRPS and fibromyalgia), have weakness in their lower extremities, an amputation or missing limb, or fatigue disorders such as M.E. or Long Covid. This list is not exhaustive.
Those with chronic hip, knee or ankle pain
Those who have needed a shower aid for a while but don’t know where to start
Those with limited space, or in a shared bathroom, as the handles make this easy to move out of the shower when others are using it.

✦ Other Things That Make Showering Easier for Me
Adhesive shower caddies from Amazon that stick on the wall and stay there securely so that my essentials, such as shampoo, conditioner, loofah and razor, are at an accessible height when I am sitting down. This helps to avoid neck, shoulder or arm strain and injury.
A non-slip bath mat that is machine washable from Dunelm. I previously made the mistake of buying a lovely, plush shower mat from a high street retailer that didn’t have any rubber or non-slip backing underneath and as soon as I stepped out of the shower, the mat, and therefore my leg, slipped across the linoleum on my bathroom floors. This led to a hip and pelvis injury that was extremely painful and took a number of days to recover from.
Large microfibre bath sheets from Amazon. Not only do these stay plush and soft no matter how many hundreds of times I have washed and tumbled dried them, but even if they air dry, they do not go crispy and rough. The microfiber helps dry my skin rapidly without irritating it, meaning that I do not have to expend more energy than necessary to be dry after showering, which for me is a very high-spoon task. These also fold down super compactly, so they don’t take up much space in your linen closet, and are brilliantly portable for stays away from home.
